Homework:

Copy vocabulary words and study them for weekly quiz.

1.asteroids - space rocks smaller than planets. Many are found between Mars and Jupiter.

2. atmosphere - a layer of gases surrounding a planet

3. axis - An imaginary straight line on which an object rotates.

4. comets - One of the small, icy bodies that orbit the sun that make tails of gas and dust when they get close to the sun

5. Copernicus - Proved that the sun is the center of the solar system

6. density - the amount of matter a given space

7. tilt - This causes Earth's seasons

8. eclipse - when one space object blocks the sun from reaching another.

9. ellipse - an oval shape.

10. full moon - a moon phase in which the entire face of the moon is visible,

1.  density -he state or quality of being dense; compactness; closely set or crowded condition.

2.  diffusion -the spreading of something more widely.

3.  buoyancy - the ability or tendency to float in water or air or some other fluid.

4.  pressure - the continuous physical force exerted on or against an object by something in contact with it.: "the slight extra pressure he applied to her hand"

5.  Pascal’s principle - The principle stating that external static pressure exerted on a confined fluid is distributed evenly throughout the fluid.

6.  Archimedes’ principle - If the weight of the water displaced is less than the weight of the object, the object will sink

 7.  volume - the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is enclosed within a container, especially when great.: "the sewer could not cope with the volume.

8.  mass - the measure of the amount of matter an object has in it; measured in grams or kilograms.

9. matter - something that has mass which can exist in the form of a solid, liquid, gas or plasma.

10. Molecule - two or more elements that are chemically joined (Water is a molecule made from two atoms of Hydrogen and one atom of Oxygen.)

11. Conduction - the transportation of heat or electricity from one place to another directly through an object (A frying pan is warmed by a hot stove due to conduction.)


12. Plasma - a very hot, gas-like state of matter

  1. Allele — alternative forms of a gene for each variation of a trait of an organism
  2. Crossing over — exchange of genetic material between non-sister chromatids from homologous chromosome during prophase I of meiosis; results in new allele combinations
  3. Diploid — cell with two of each kind of chromosome; is said to contain a diploid, or 2n, number of chromosomes
  4. Dominant — observed trait of an organism that mask the recessive form of a trai
  5. Genetics — branch of biology that studies heredity
  6. Genotype — combination of genes in an organism
  7. Haploid — cell with one of each kind of chromosome; is said to contain a haploid or n, number of chromosomes.
  8. Heredity — passing on of characteristics from parents to offspring
  9. Heterozygous — when there are two different alleles for a trait
  10. Homologous chromosome — paired chromosomes with genes from the same traits arranged in the same order.
  11. Homozygous — when there are two identical alleles for a trait
  12. Hybrid — offspring formed by parents having different forms of a specific trait.
  13. Meiosis — type of cell division where one body cell produces for gametes, each containing half the number of chromosomes in a parent’s body.
  14. Phenotype — outward appearance of an organism, regardless of its genes.
  15. Recessive — trait of an organism that can be masked by the dominant form of a trait
  16. Trait — characteristic that is inherited; can be either dominant or recessive

1.  glaciers - a slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near the poles

2.  Valley of Mexico - The Valley of Mexico is part of the central highlands and lies at an altitude of about a mile and a half. At the low point of the Valley there is a large lake that made human life sustainable in the generally dry country. Long before the Aztecs came to the Valley of Mexico the land had seen the rise and decline of a number of other tribal groups. One of these groups built the great city of Teotihuacán. From Teotihuacán its people built an empire.

3.  chinampas - a method of Mesoamerican agriculture which used small, rectangular areas of fertile arable land to grow crops on the shallow lake beds in the Valley of Mexico.

4.  Pachakuti - Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui was the ninth Incan emperor who ruled from 1438 to 1471. He is best known for transforming the Incas from a tiny little kingdom to a powerful empire the size of the east coast of the USA. He is the first Incan ruler that historians can actually confirm existed. He is widely regarded as the greatest Incan emperor for his conquests, social reforms, and civic planning.


5.  Tenochtitlan - Tenochtitlán, located on an island near the western shore of LakeTexcoco in central Mexico, was the capital city and religious centre of the Aztec civilization

1. fish - a limbless cold-blooded vertebrate animal with gills and fins and living wholly in water.: "the sea is thick with fish".

10.  protective coloration - an animal that enables it to blend with its surroundings and therefore escape the attention of predators

1. Stephen Austin - 1793-1836) - Known as "The Father of Texas," Stephen F. Austin established the first Anglo-American colony in the Tejas province of Mexico and saw it grow into an independent republic.

2. Mexican War - A war fought between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848. The United States won the war, encouraged by the feelings of many Americans that the country was accomplishing its manifest destiny of expansion.

3. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo - The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed on February 2, 1848, ended the Mexican-American War in favor of the United States. The war had begun almost two years earlier, in May 1846, over a territorial dispute involving Texas. The treaty added an additional 525,000 square miles to United States territory, including the including the land that makes up all or parts of present-day Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. Mexico also gave up all claims to Texas and recognized the Rio Grande as America’s southern boundary.

4. gold rush - a rapid movement of people to a newly discovered goldfield. The first major gold rush, to California in 1848–49, was followed by others in the US, Australia (1851–53), South Africa (1884), and Canada (Klondike, 1897–98

5. Forty-niners -a person participating in the California gold rush in 1849.

Weekly Reminders - 4/13/15

Welcome Back! Hoped that everyone had a peaceful, blessed and restful Easter break!
This week students in grades 3-8 will be administered the NYS ELA exam.  Please make sure that your child get enought nighly sleep and a healthy breakfast.  Students should have at least 5 sharpened #2 pencils for the testing. Students can bring in starbursts or candies to suck on during the exam. NO GUM!
