Weekly Reminders - 5/18/15

5/21 - Students in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade who participated in the Water Resources Art and Poetry Contest will be attending the awards ceremony on Thursday.  Permission slips were sent home on 5/18.   Please note that your child will return to the school approximately 4:00PM if there are no delays.

1. fossil -  "obtained by digging") are the preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the remote past

2.  petrified remains - formed by the replacement of original materials (like bones) by minerals.

3.  carbonaceous film - carbon residue remaining from the organism or part of an organism that has been fossilized.

4.  mold - formed by the impression left in rock by the remains of an organism
5. cast - occurs when the mold is filled in by precipitating minerals.

6. index fossil - The fossil remains of an organism that lived in a particular geologic age, used to identify or date the rock or rock layer in which it is found.

7.  principle of superposition - tells us that the layer on the bottom is the oldest, and the layers get younger as they pile up.

8.  relative dating - is a method of sequencing events in the order in which they happened.

9.  unconformity - A substantial break in the succession of stratified sedimentary rocks, following a period when deposition was not taking place.


10.  absolute dating - Absolute dating is a method of estimating the age of a rock sample in years via radiometric techniques.

8.  resistance - The opposition that a substance offers to the flow of electric current.

9.  parallel circuit - one that has two or more paths for the electricity to flow, the loads are parallel to each other.

4.  gravity - is the force that causes two particles to pull towards each other. Learn about gravity and find out how Newton and Einstein explain gravity.

5.  scientific method -is a logical and rational order of steps by which scientists come to conclusions about the world around them.

6.  Galileo Galilei - The forefather of what we know today about motion, mass and astronomy, Galileo also dealt with accusations of heresy.

7.  Isaac Newton -invented calculus and explained optics. His most significant work involved forces and the development of a universal law of gravity.

8.  caravel - is a small, highly maneuverable sailing ship developed in the 15th century by the Portuguese to explore along the West African coast and into the Atlantic.

9.  strait -a narrow passage of water connecting two large bodies of water.


10.  Strait of Magellan - is an oceanic passage generally connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, situated in southern Chile and Argentina.

2.  Anaconda Plan - was General Winfield Scott's strategic plan to blockade and cut off the Confederacy from the outside world forcing them to surrender.

3.  blockade - block, obstruct.( the Union blockade of Southern ports during the Civil War)

4.  Emancipation Proclamation – President Abraham Lincoln - issued on January 1, 1863, this Presidential Proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."

5.  Gettysburg Address - A speech delivered by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. Lincoln was speaking at the dedication of a soldiers' cemetery at the site of the Battle of Gettysburg.

6.  total war - is a military conflict in which nations mobilize all available resources in order to destroy another nation's ability

7.  Robert E. Lee - (January 19, 1807 – October 12, 1870) was an American soldier best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War from 1862 until his surrender in 1865. 

8.  Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson - was a leading Confederate general during the U.S. Civil War, commanding forces at Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.

9.  Fort Sumter - The Battle of Fort Sumter (April 12–14, 1861) was the bombardment and surrender of Fort Sumter, near Charleston, South Carolina, that started the American Civil War.


10.  Antietam - also called Battle of Sharpsburg, (September 17, 1862), a decisive engagement in the American Civil War (1861–65) that halted the Confederate advance on Maryland for the purpose of gaining military supplies.

8. Black hole - a region of space having a gravitational field so intense that no matter or radiation can escape.

9.  chromosphere  - is an outer layer of the sun. This layer can only be viewed during an eclipse when the rest of the sun is blocked.

10. Sunspots - a spot or patch appearing from time to time on the sun's surface, appearing dark by contrast with its surroundings.

11.   binary system is a system of two objects in space (usually stars, but also brown dwarfs, planets, galaxies, or asteroids) which are so close that their gravitational interaction causes them to orbit about a common center of mass.

12. Corona - A faintly colored luminous ring appearing to surround a celestial body (such as the Moon or Sun) that is visible through a haze or thin cloud, caused by diffraction of light from suspended matter in the intervening medium

13.  prominence is a large, bright, gaseous feature extending outward from the Sun's surface, often in a loop shape.

14. Elliptical galaxies range from circular (remember, a circle is an ellipse!) to long, narrow, and cigar-shaped.

10.  purebred - of or relating to an animal, all of whose ancestors derive over many generations from a recognized breed.
