Reminders for Week of 12/19/11
Tuesday 20th - 6th grade Christmas Show. Dismissal @ 12:00. NO AFTER-SCHOOL for grades 5-8. Students in the 6th grade must be back by 4:00 - 4:30PM for their show. Parents are asked to remain in the auditorium. Only students are allowed in their classroom.
Wednesday 21st. - Last day of School - Lessons & Carols. Students may dress-up in their Christmas outfits. NO JEANS, SNEAKERS, or SWEATS. Dismissal @ 12:00. N O AFTER-SCHOOL.

If you can, please bring in HATS,, GLOVES, or SOCKS for the less fortunate in our community. The Church will give out the items collected on Saturday (12/17/11) at A luncheon being held on their behalf.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING IN STRONG PLASTIC BAGS TO PACK AWAY THEIR BOOKS FOR CHRISTMAS RECESS.
6th Grade Christmas show is on Tuesday 12/20/11@ 5:00PM. Girls need red skirt, green or white turtlenecks/shirts, white stockings, and black shoes. Boys need black pants, red or green turtleneck/shirt, and black shoes. Turtleneck sweaters are preferred.
Our class is in need of Mary, Joseph, angels, and shepherds clothing/costumes. Our class would be extremely grateful if anyone can assist us in obtaining these outfits.
Students will need Christmas cards this week. They will be writing to each other. A grade will be given for correctly addressing the envelope.
The last day of school is 12/21/11. Dismissal @ 12:00 following Lessons & Carols.
Students in grades 5,6,7, & 8 should have their Science Projects with materials ready for presentation beginning the 2nd week of January 2012.
Beginning January, all four teachers will be posting the same vocabulary definitions for the week and there will be only ten per week! All students MUST copy these words with definitions in their Vocabulary notebooks every Monday for HOMEWORK.
This assignment will be checked every Tuesday and a zero will need to be entered for homework if work is not done. If a student does not have access to the internet, he/she may stay from 3:00 to 3:30 in the after-school on Mondays only to copy the weekly definition from the blog.
Students MUST be picked up at 3:30PM if staying to copy words.

Weekly Vocabulary Words - 12/5/11
2. Atmosphere - The gaseous or air portion of the physical environment that encircles a planet. In the case of the earth, it is held more or less near the surface by the earth's gravitational attraction. The divisions of the atmosphere include the troposphere, the stratosphere, the mesosphere, the ionosphere, and the exosphere.
3. Weather- The state of the atmosphere at a specific time and with respect to its effect on life and human activities. It is the short term variations of the atmosphere, as opposed to the long term, or climatic, changes.
4. Barometer - An instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure. Two examples are the aneroid barometer and the mercurial barometer.
5, Current- A horizontal movement of water, such as the Gulf Stream off the east coast of North America, or air, such as the jet stream.

Weekly Reminders - 11/28/11
* Students should begin researching Science Fair topics for approval. Topics need to be approved before beginning project. Students are not allowed to work in groups. Reports are not accepted. Projects should have a Purpose and Hypothesis to be tested/experimented. Display boards are required. Students must follow the Scientific Methods.
Students should be working on their NHD projects. Parents need to visit the NHD site for A COMPLETE GUIDE for the projects. It is the same guidelines that is followed by the school. O.L.Q.M does not have separate guidelines for completing this project.

* Parents/Students: Some students are wearing their gym uniforms when there is no gym classes. ONLY the greenhouse students are allowed to wear the gym uniforms daily. Detention will be given to students who are out of proper uniform.
* Several students are choosing to break the school rules by chewing gum during school time. 30 days of detention will be given if a child is caught chewing gum during school. NO EXCEPTION!

SCHOOL YEAR 2011-2012
Welcome Back-School year 2011-2012
Dear Parents/Students in grades 5th; 6th; 7th & 8th grades:
Welcome back to OLQM, school year of 2011-2012. Hoped you all had a wonderful and restful summer. Please read the following information for rules and regulations as well as the required supply lists.
Reminder: School begins at 8:00AM and ends at 3:00PM. After-School Program begins at 3:00PM.
Here are a list of rules that must be maintained throughout the school year:
* It is important that your child is prepared with all school supplies;
* School begins at 8:00am, if your child is late, he/she must get a late pass;
* Parents are NOT ALLOWED to be in the classroom or floor after 8:00am.
* Parents will only be seen by APPOINTMENTS-7:45am - made through the office.
* Please AVOID picking up your child before 3:00pm dismissal, your child will be missing
valuable class time. ALL MISSED WORK IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF YOUR CHILD!
* Absent notes are required by the State whenever your child is absent from school.
* Proper uniforms must be worn at all required time. This includes: girls wearing vests, skirt to
the knees, proper leggings and shoes, hair neatly combed. Boys: proper hair cut (see parent
handbook), school shoes-NO SNEAKERS.
* Cell phones MUST BE OFF during school hours. If your child is seen with a cell phone during
school hours, it will be taken away and sent to the office.
* Parents and students is responsible for checking the school blog: olqmnyc.blogspot; for
classwork, homework, and other valuable information.
* Homework should be checked by parents. It is suggested that parents sign their child's
homework.
* Test papers are sent home to be review by parents. Test papers must be signed and return to
teacher the NEXT day.
Please note that it is imperative that these rules are followed in order to have a productive and successful school year for 2011-2012.

End of the School Year - 2010-2011
It has been a wonderful, productive, and Blessed school year. It was certainly a pleasure having each and everyone of you in my class. Parents/Guardians, I thank you for your support this year.
This week students will be packing up their classroom. Portfolios and final exams will be sent home on Thursday. On Friday, report cards will be distributed at 10:00AM following dismissal.
6/22 - Wednesday - 6th grade will have pizza and juice for lunch. Students need to bring in $3:00 by 6/21 (Tuesday). Dress clothes are allowed.
Wednesday is the last day for the After-School Program.
Thursday, students must be in full uniform for the 8th grade graduation.
Friday, report card distribution followed by dismissal.
I hope you all have a wonderful, fun, enjoyable, and safe Summer!

3. Convection - the transportation of heat from one place to another by the movement of a liquid or gas (A classroom is warmed by a hot air blower due to convection.)
4. Conduction - the transportation of heat or electricity from one place to another directly through an object (A frying pan is warmed by a hot stove due to conduction.
5. Median - the middle number in a set of ordered data (The median of {1,1,1,2,4,6,6} is 2 since 2 is the middle number when all of the numbers are placed in order. If there are an even number of numbers, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers.)
