WEEKLY VOCABULARY WORDS FOR 2/1/10

1. waning - occurs after a full moon, when the amount of the moon's lighted side that can be seen becomes smaller.
2. trilobite - organism that lived hundreds of millions of years ago and is considered an index fossil of the Paleozoic era.
3. sori - spore-producing structures on the undersides of fern fronds.
4. sill - intrusive igneous rock body that forms when magma is squeezed into a crack and hardens.
5. prothallus - fern gametophyte, which can make its own food, absorb water and nutrients, and has both male and female reproductive structures

REMINDERS

2/1-2/5 - Science Fair Projects are due this week. No exception.

2/2 -Group picture day - Uniform-No gym or play clothes.

2/4 - 12:00 Dismissal - Parent-Teacher Conference from 3:00-7:00 pm.

2/5 - Individual picture day. Students are allowed to wear dress clothes. NO JEANS OR TEE SHIRTS.

REMINDERS

WEEKLY VOCABULARY WORDS FOR 1/25/10

1. scrubber - a device used in coal-burning power plants that allows the gases in the smoke to dissolve in water until the pH of the smoke increases to a safe level.

2. plucking - process that adds boulders, gravel, and sand to glacier's bottom and sides as water freezes and thaws and breaks off pieces of surrounding rocks.

3. Periosteum - tough, tight-fitting membrane that covers the surface of bones.

4. leaching - removal of minerals that have been dissolved in water.

5. creep - mass movement that occurs when sediments slowly inch their way down a hill. It is common in areas of freezing and thawing.
