Weekly Vocabulary Words 3/1/10

1. isthmus - a narrow strip of land that connects two larger land masses.
2. griot - an oral historian and musician who became important in western Africa in the 1500s and still carries on oral traditions today.
3. emancipee - a person who has been freed, or emancipated, from a sentence of punishment given to him or her by the government.
4. intifada - The Palestinian uprising against Israeli rule that began in 1987.
5. quipu - a knotted cord used for record-keeping by the Inca.

WEEKLY VOCABULARY WORDS FOR 2/22/10

1. postanal tail - muscular structure at the end of a developing chordate (animals having at some stage of development a notochord, gill slits, and a dorsal tubular nerve cord).
2. sessile - describes an organism that remains attached to one place during its lifetime.
3. radula - in gastropods, (mollusks having one-piece, straight or spiral shells, as snails) the tonguelike organ with rows of teeth used to scrape and tear food.
4. preening - process in which a bird rubs oil from an oil gland over its feathers to condition them and make them water repellent.
5. mycorrhizae - network of hyphae (a thread-like structure composed of cells attached end to end that forms the main tissue in many fungus) and plant roots that helps plants absorb water and minerals from soil.

WEEKLY VOCABULARY WORDS FOR 2/15/10

1. armistice - an agreement to stop fighting; a truce.
2. circa - a Latin word, often abbreviated "c" that means "about" or "around."
3. codex - a manuscript page such as the kind that used by the Aztec to record historical, religious, governmental and scientific knowledge.
4. indulgence - a pardon or forgiveness given by the Roman Catholic Church to people who act against Christian teachings.
5. vermiculite - any of a group of minerals that expand on being heated. used especially for insulation.
