1. fossil -  "obtained by digging") are the preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the remote past

2.  petrified remains - formed by the replacement of original materials (like bones) by minerals.

3.  carbonaceous film - carbon residue remaining from the organism or part of an organism that has been fossilized.

4.  mold - formed by the impression left in rock by the remains of an organism
5. cast - occurs when the mold is filled in by precipitating minerals.

6. index fossil - The fossil remains of an organism that lived in a particular geologic age, used to identify or date the rock or rock layer in which it is found.

7.  principle of superposition - tells us that the layer on the bottom is the oldest, and the layers get younger as they pile up.

8.  relative dating - is a method of sequencing events in the order in which they happened.

9.  unconformity - A substantial break in the succession of stratified sedimentary rocks, following a period when deposition was not taking place.


10.  absolute dating - Absolute dating is a method of estimating the age of a rock sample in years via radiometric techniques.
