SCIENCE: 6th Grade - Week of September 8th, 2008

Monday 8th, 2008

AIM: p. S1 - Describe how scientists use the scientific method in their work.

PROCEDURE: Scientific Method vocabulary words.
Build on student’s prior knowledge – Ask students if they have ever wondered
about things in the world they have seen, such as the night sky, a falling ball, or
a machine making work easier.

HOMEWORK: Questions on LL: 1. What steps might a scientist follow in order to investigate
a problem?
2. How can reading, math, writing, and technology be used in inquiry?


Tuesday 9th, 2008

AIM: p. S 1 - What are the inquiry skills scientists’ uses?

PROCEDURE: Students will understand how they can use the same inquiry skills scientists
used in their everyday life.

HOMEWORK: Write up an experiment using the scientific method.


Wednesday 10th, 2008

AIM: p. S. 2 – Why does the scientific method usually start with an observation about the
world around us?

PROCEDURE: Online: Spirit and Opportunity Mission – Students will observe the launching of
Spirit and Opportunity by NASA in 2004.
Commentary on how the Scientific Method was used in this endeavor.

HOMEWORK: 1 paragraph – What are some scientific discoveries that were started by an
observation.


Thursday 11th, 2008 (Mass @ 9:00am)

AIM: p.4 – Question and Hypothesis.

PROCEDURE: Students will understand that scientists often start with an unanswered
question.
Students will make statements that can be tested to answer a question.

HOMEWORK: What is a hypothesis? On Loose-leaf. 6 sentences


Friday 12th, 2008

AIM: How to plan an experiment using the Scientific Method?

PURPOSE/ACTIVITY: Students will choose a topic for a project.
Students will formulate a hypothesis and test that hypothesis

HOMEWORK: Complete Lab Sheet.
