WEEKLY VOCABULARY WORDS FOR 11/30/09

1. Archipelago - a group or chain of islands such as the several island chains of Asia.
2. Monsoon - plenty of rain brought to the Asia's region by seasonal winds.
3. Sultans - are supreme rulers who governed the Ottoman empire.
4. Feudalism - a way of organizing and governing society.
5. Vassal - nobles who did not own land and took an oath of loyality to the lord by pledging to serve him.

2. Polygenic inheritance - when a group of gene pairs acts together to produce a
single trait.
3. Pedigree - a tool for tracing the occurrence of a trait in a family.
4. Genetic Engineering - experimenting with biological and chemical methods to
change the DNA sequence that makes up a gene.
5. Genetics - the study of how traits are inherited through the actions of alleles
(genes)

REMINDERS

On 11/17 & 11/18, students in the 5th grade will be administer the NYS Social Studies Exam. Students must have #2 pencils and pens.

All assignments must be completed. Notes to parents are written in the purple assignment books.

1. Alleles - different forms a gen may have for a trait.
2. Allulvial fan - triangular deposit of sediments that is formed when a river empties from a mountain valley out onto a flat, open plain.
3. Atherosclerosis - cardiovascular condition resulting from fatty deposits on aterial walls, which can clog blood vessesl and interfere with blood flow.
