Voltaic batteries come in all shapes and sizes, turning chemical energy into the electrical energy we need to power our cell phones, iPods, tablets, cars… you name it! These batteries seem pretty complicated, but you can make a real voltaic battery.  You need some vinegar, nails, copper wire, and an ice tray… you’re in for a lesson in circuits you’ll never forget.
Materials
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • 5 pieces of copper wire
  • 5 galvanized nails
  • Ice tray
  • 1 LED light
OR

When you poke five, evenly-spaced wholes into the side of a bottle, they come out as five separate streams. That is, until you run your finger through the streams. Like magic, the five streams combine to form one! The principle at work is a force called cohesion, and the Water Twist is a great hands-on way to experience cohesion, polarity, and the properties of water.
Materials

OR
Homemade Rock Candy
Principles like sedimentation and supersaturated solutions. -

Materials
  • Cane sugar
  • Water
  • Drinking glass
  • Pencil
  • Food coloring
  • String

OR

INVISIBLE SODA

Your pop disappears when you add milk, but what makes the coke vanish?
Milk goes great with a lot of things: cereal, cookies, cake, and pie. You know what's even more incredible to mix with milk? A big ol' bottle of soda! We know what you're thinking, "Soda and milk would be disgusting, together!" You're absolutely correct, but you aren't supposed to drink the mixture! Instead, watch the magic happen when you mix the two.
Materials
  • 20 oz. bottle of regular (brown) soda
  • 2% milk
Please let me know on Tuesday if you can get these supplies.  4 per group.

Weekly Reminders - 9/8/14

Parents/Guardians/students:

Welcome to the new school year 2014-2015.  I am blessed and honored to have the opportunity to be part of your child's educational endeavors.   I look forward to building a relationship where we can all work together to foster and promote a successful and productive academic year for your child.  Here are some key elements to make it a smooth and constructed school year:

All homework must be completed neatly, following directions given in class, in pen unless told otherwise, and hand in when DUE!

Students must be in proper uniform unless they are told to dress up or dress down!

Students must be prepared for all classes!

Please read the monthly calendar, school blog, and the SIS for important updates on your child.  You will need a password for the SIS system to see your child's subject and behavioral grades.  Each of your child's teacher will have their lesson plans, events, homework, and other important details posted on the blog every week.

Please make sure your child comes to school on time.  When your child is late, classes are interrupted.  Tardiness will also prevent your child from getting honors.  If your child is absent, a note is required, if sick a doctor's note must be brought in.

If you need to meet with me, please make an appointment with the office. It is important that you meet with all 4 of your child's teachers frequently. Do not wait for report card, then it is too late for that quarter.  All meetings with parents are recorded and documented.
