Reminders - Week of 1/17/11

Parents/Students:
Mid-Year exams has begun. It is important that students have their necessary books to study each night. Exam schedules are listed on the Monthly Calender and the teacher's Blog.

All assignments must be handed in on time. All assignments are posted on the blog, therefore if absent, assignments must be completed on return to school.

Science Fair Projects are due the week of January 31st - February 4th. Projects WILL NOT be accepted after 2/4/11.

Vocabulary Test - Words from September to December 1/14/11

1. Biovorous - An organism that can convert biological material into energy for sustenance.

2. Biostasis - A state in which the cell's and tissue structure of an organism are preserved so that they can be restored again with the help of cell repair machines.

3. Abiotic stress - The non-living environmental factors like drought, extreme cold, heat, high winds that has negative effects on the organisms in a specific environment.

4. Anaerobe - The organisms that thrive and grow in an environment without oxygen.

5. Cytology - The branch of science under life science that deals with the study of cell structure. 6 .

7. conscience- the sense within you that tells you when you are doing right or wrong

8. encounter- to meet by chance; an unexpected meeting; to be faced with

11. Personification: is giving human traits (qualities, feelings, action, or characteristics) to non-living objects (things, colors, qualities, or ideas).

For example: The window winked at me. The verb, wink, is a human action. A window is a non-living object.

12.Metaphor: is when you use two nouns and compare or contrast them to one another. Unlike simile, you don't use "like" or "as" in the comparison.

13.Simile: is when you compare two nouns (persons, places or things) that are unlike, with "like" or "as."

14.Imagery: involves one or more of your five senses (hearing, taste, touch, smell, sight).

15.Repetition: is when you have a word and use it more than once.

16. Agnostic - a person who says that it is impossible for human beings to know or to prove the existence of God.

17. Schism - a split, as in the split between the Western and Eastern Orthodox churches.

18. Prophet - a person called by God to speak for him.

19. Epistle - a letter; in the New Testament there are twenty-one epistles.

43. Conjunction - A compound statement formed by joining two statements with the connective and.

44. Composite Number - A whole number greater than 1 that has more than two factors.

45. Capacity - The amount, usually of liquid, a container can hold.

46. Canonize: To declare somebody as a saint.

47. Beseech: To ask earnestly or beg somebody to do something.

48. Memoir: a biography or an account of historical events, especially one written from personal knowledge.

49. Orthodox: a follower of traditional or established beliefs or rules, or a member of an Orthodox denomination.

50. Persist: to continue steadily or obstinately despite problems, difficulties, or obstacles.

Weekly Announcements - 1/10/11

* SCIENCE FAIR PROJECTS: All students in grades 5, 6, 7, 8 MUST have their completed Science Fair Projects ready for presentation the Week of January 31st, 2011.
* Students were given the process, methods, setup and criteria on how the projects must be done.
* No LATE projects will be accepted. Students were given enough time to prepare for projects.
No Exception since students need to be graded for Report Card.
* Students who did not complete a project will receive a failing grade.

Outlines for Exams were posted last week. See last week's blog.

8th Grade Science Study Outline for Quarterly Exam


Chapter 2 - Draw and label parts of an atom. Describe half-life and how it is calculated.

Chapter 3 - Explain the difference between a period and a group on the periodic table.

Chapter 4- Describe the arrangement of electrons in an atom. Construct a model for methane.

Chapter 5 - Study vocabulary words and the difference between physical and chemical change. What evidence might tell you that a chemical reaction has occurred?

Chapter 6 - Describe how to calculate speed. Explain how to calculate velocity and acceleration. Describe what energy is and describe some of its form. What is the law of conservation of momentum. Describe the collision that will occur when you roll a ball at a basketball. Predict what will happen to a ball if it bounces off the bumper of an approaching car.
