NYC History Day Project

Students in grades 5th and 6th will begin researching topics for NYC History Day projects.  Parents and students can go online to the Museum of the City of New York -> Educators->History Day themes and rules.
Topics are due 11/9/11.

Weekly Vocabulary Words 10/24/11

1. Hydroelectricty - electricity that is produced by flowing water.


2. photosphere - the lowest layer of the sun's atmosphere and the layers from which light is given off.

3. corona - the largest layer of the sun's atomsphere and extends millions of kilometers into space.

4. nebula - large cloud of gas and dust in the beginning of a star's life.

5. binary system - when two stars orbit each other.

Weekly Reminders - 10/24/11

9/25 - CSI Trip for grades 5, 6, 7 & 8.  Students must wear their Gym shirts.  Mr. Placido will give students a menu for BBQ (restaurant) on Monday.

Most importantly, this is Unit 1 Exam Week.  Students will be assessed on information given from September to present.  Notes and outlines were given to students to study.

Weekly Reminders - 10/17/11

*  Last week vocabulary test will be given on 10/18.  Study the words from last week.

*  Parents/Students: Some students are wearing their gym uniforms when there is no gym classes.  ONLY the greenhouse students are allowed to wear the gym uniforms daily.  Detention will be given to students who are out of proper uniform.

*  Several students are choosing to break the school rules by chewing gum during school time.  30 days of detention will be given if a child is caught chewing gum during school. NO EXCEPTION!

*  Homework must be completed neatly and on time.  Ample time is given for students to copy homework and pack up for dismissal.

  • 1.  Conductor- A material through which heat passes easily 

  • 2.  Insulator- A material through which heat does not pass easily.

  • 3.  Conduction- The transfer of energy through matter (solids) by the direct contact of  the particles.

  • 4.  Convection- The transfer of energy in a fluid by the movement of the heated particles.

  • 5.  Radiation- The transfer of energy through space by electromagnetic waves.

    Homework:
    Consider the Law of Conservation of mass and the statement, “We are rapidly using up our natural resources.” Write a short essay that show that the law of conservation and the statement are not in conflict.  Essay should include we using resources in the form in which they exist, but because of the law of conservation of mass, atoms cannot be destroyed.

    10/6 - Research paper on cardiovascular diseases (details were given in class)
    10/7 - Research the diets of Native Americans, Indians, Inuit, and people who live in the rainforest.  How does the incidence of heart disease vary with culture.

    The 2 research paper are very similar with the exception of 2nd paper which have specific cultures.  Follow the same format.
