WEEKLY VOCABULARY WORDS FOR 2/1/10

1. waning - occurs after a full moon, when the amount of the moon's lighted side that can be seen becomes smaller.
2. trilobite - organism that lived hundreds of millions of years ago and is considered an index fossil of the Paleozoic era.
3. sori - spore-producing structures on the undersides of fern fronds.
4. sill - intrusive igneous rock body that forms when magma is squeezed into a crack and hardens.
5. prothallus - fern gametophyte, which can make its own food, absorb water and nutrients, and has both male and female reproductive structures

WEEKLY VOCABULARY WORDS FOR 1/25/10

1. scrubber - a device used in coal-burning power plants that allows the gases in the smoke to dissolve in water until the pH of the smoke increases to a safe level.

2. plucking - process that adds boulders, gravel, and sand to glacier's bottom and sides as water freezes and thaws and breaks off pieces of surrounding rocks.

3. Periosteum - tough, tight-fitting membrane that covers the surface of bones.

4. leaching - removal of minerals that have been dissolved in water.

5. creep - mass movement that occurs when sediments slowly inch their way down a hill. It is common in areas of freezing and thawing.

History Fair and Science Fair projects are requirements for this quarter. It consist of 50% of their final grade average in each subject.

Dear Parents and Students

Quarterly Exams will be administered this week. Please review the monthly calendar for schedule of exams. It is important that all books are brought home to study for exam.

Science Fair Projects are due the week of 1/26 - 2/3. Please make sure that all materials are brought in to demonstrate experiment. All students MUST complete an experiment in order to get a passing grade in science.

History Fair must also be worked on during this time.

Eccentricity - Not situated in the center or having the axis away from the center.

Irridium - Iridium is the chemical element with atomic number 77, and is represented by the symbol Ir. A very hard, brittle, silvery-white transition metal.

Moraine - a deposit of material such as boulders, grave, and sand left by a glacier.

Perigee - a artificial satellite nearest to earth or point in the orbit of the earth.

Chapter 2 - Draw and label parts of an atom. Describe half-life and how it is calculated.
Chapter 3 - Explain the difference between a period and a group on the periodic table.
Chapter 4- Describe the arrangement of electrons in an atom. Consstruct a model for methane.
Chapter 5 - Study vocabulary words and the difference between physical and chemical change. What evidence might tell you that a chemical reaction has occurred?
