WEEKLY VOCABULARY WORDS FOR 12/7/09

1. phylogeny - The evolutionary development and history of a species.
2. binomial - a biological species name consisting of two terms.
3. nomenclature - The scientific naming of species whereby each species receives a Latin or Latinized name of two parts, the first indicating the genus and the second being the specific epithet. For example, Juglans regia is the English walnut; Juglans nigra, the black walnut.
4. taxonomy - The classification of organisms in an ordered system that indicates natural relationships.
5. dichotomous key - A dichotomous key is a tool that allows the user to determine the identity of items in the natural world, such as trees, wildflowers, mammals, reptiles, rocks, and fish.
